Confused about the new DVSA rules? From March 2026, the way you book and change your automatic driving test is changing. Read our simple guide to stay prepared! πΒ
DVSA booking rules
Learning to drive is exciting, but the DVSA has just introduced some big changes to make the booking system fairer for everyone. If you are learning in an automatic car in Slough, Maidenhead, or anywhere in the UK, these new rules apply to you!
Here is everything you need to know in simple terms. π
Starts: 31 March 2026
In the past, you could move your driving test date up to 6 times. Not anymore! π ββοΈ
From now on, you can only make 2 changes to your booking. This includes:
Changing the date or time π
Changing the test centre (e.g., switching from Slough to High Wycombe) π
Swapping a test with another learner π€
Tip: If you use up both changes and still aren't ready, youβll have to cancel the test, get a refund, and start the booking process all over again. Only move your test if you absolutely have to!
Starts: 12 May 2026
This is a big one! To stop "bots" and third-party companies from hoovering up all the slots, the DVSA now requires you to book your own test. π»
Instructors can't do it for you: Your driving instructor is no longer allowed to book or manage the test on your behalf.
The Check: When you book on GOV.UK, youβll have to tick a box confirming you are the actual learner taking the test.
Starts: 9 June 2026
Sometimes people book a test far away just to get a date. Now, the DVSA is stopping this. If you need to move your test location, you can only move it to one of the 3 nearest centres to your original booking. ποΈ
With these new limits, it is more important than ever to only book your test when you are truly ready. At ASK Drive, I use a progress tracker to make sure you are confident before you hit that "Book" button.
